Family: Bovidae

Diet: Herbivorous, feeding on, forbs, sedges, rushes, horsetails and lichens.

Reproduction: The female is sexually mature at 2 years and the male at 2 to 3 years. Mating occurs between early July and mid-September. A single calf is born between May and early June after a gestation period of 10 months, and is weaned after 7 months.

Longevity: Up to 20 years in the wild and 30 years in captivity.

Predators: Young are occasionally taken by grizzly bears, black bears, gray wolves and pumas.

Status: Threatened, it is rarer in the wild (only a few hundred) than in captivity. It is currently more frequent in domestic farming.
