Diet : Omnivorous, feeding principally on herbaceous plants, berries and nuts, but also eats insects, honey, small mammals, fish, carrion and waste, and sometimes birds.
Reproduction : Sexually mature at 4 years. Mating occurs between June and July. The 2-3 cubs are born between mid-January and early February after a delayed implantation (4.5-5 months) followed by an active gestation period of 6-8 weeks, and are weaned after 5 months.
Longevity : Up to 20 years in the wild and 30 years in captivity.
Predators : Occasionally taken by grizzly bears, gray wolves and pumas.
Status : Abundant, not at risk. |
