A bear cub rescued for a better future !
 |
The wild Zoo of Saint-Félicien welcomed, a few weeks ago, an American black bear cub of approximately 6 months old.
The small bear was found lying on the road in the Monts-Valin Park on August 22nd by Marie-Helene Haché, guard-naturalist at the park.
After having stayed about thirty minutes at the “Centre d’interprétation des battures et de rehabilitation des oiseaux” (C.I.B.R.O.) the bear cub, which was in a poor state, was transferred to the private veterinary clinic Claveau, Dubord and Brûlé. After a few days of care, the bear cub began to recover from its injuries.
On August 30th, the small cub was transferred to the wild Zoo of Saint-Félicien, where it will evolve in a natural and safe environment in semi captivity.

After having undergone some small medical interventions - vaccine, worm-treatment and suturing of a cutaneous wound- the small bear is now on its way to full recovery.

The bear cub was separated from her mother very soon and now, at almost 40 lbs, it will need to learn to live on its own. She will spend the coming winter in an artificial shelter where she will hibernate. She will join the group of black bears in the Nature trail Park in Spring time. The bear cub is the fifteenth of its species at the Zoo. The young female will increase the gene pool diversity of the black bears at the zoo and decrease the age average which is actually 10 years old.
Good luck to her! |
