Where do frogs go in winter?

Not very far! They are not like birds that can fly and spend winter down south where it is warm. Some frogs spend the winter season in water that has not frozen while others hide in the mud near ponds. It is so cold that frogs freeze along with the ground and come back to life in springtime, when it thaws. The wood frog simply hides under a pile of leaves or a tree stump. That’s why sometimes you can find one in the middle of the forest, lying there as stiff as a plank!

Where do algae get their energy?

Algae are like plants. They absorb their energy from the sun. That is why they grow in surface water, where the light can reach them. There are many other microscopic species of algae that float in the water. They have to rely on the currents to remain in areas where light penetrates.

Where do bats hide in daytime?

Our friends the bats have a number of hiding places! Some make use of holes abandoned by woodpeckers; others hide behind loose, flaking tree bark. More rarely, you can find a few in a cave  or in an old mine; hiding places that they prefer to use in the winter, when they are hibernating. And, obviously, they also take refuge in our lofts!

Where does the ouananiche (landlocked salmon) lay its eggs?

The adult ouananiche, unlike other salmon, lives in fresh water. It can be found, amongst other places, in lake Saint-Jean where it feeds on smaller fish, such as the rainbow smelt. However, the ouananiche does not lay its eggs there. In autumn, adults leave the lake and swim up rivers. This is the spawning period. Each one goes back to the waterway where it was born and females lay their eggs there which, when they hatch, will introduce new inhabitants to the river. Bizarre de phrase, je dirais: After two to three years, little ouananiche will then go swimming into the lake.
